Test and Tagging

by your local Electrician

on South Coast

What is Testing?

Testing refers to the stringent visual inspection and the physical testing of your electrical equipment or appliances using our specialised testing equipment. Our equipment has been carefully designed and purpose built to uncover problems that might not be obvious to the naked eye. Safework NSW oversee the test and tag compliance.

What is Tagging?

Tagging is the act of literally placing a durable tag that indicates a piece of equipment has been inspected by a competent person and found to be in good order. Tags are checked by safety inspectors and if they are missing or out of date, you can be penalised. Tags also tell your workers that equipment has been cleared and is safe for them to use.

Why test and tag?

  • There are many good reasons, but perhaps the single most important one is that failing to test and tag can put your life and the life of your workers’ lives at serious risk of serious injury or even death.
  • In addition, faulty equipment can cause fires that cause serious damage and loss of life.
  • If that’s not enough, you are legally required by the government to test and tag electrical equipment and there are hefty fines for failing to do so.
  • Give yourself and your workers the peace of mind of knowing that equipment is safe to operate.

What do you need
to get tested and tagged?

If you are a person conducting a business or undertaking, you are required to test electrical equipment that is:

  • Supplied with electricity through an electrical socket; and
  • Used in an environment in which the normal use of electrical equipment exposes the equipment to operating conditions that are likely to result in damage to the equipment or its expected lifespan – this includes conditions that are involve exposure to moisture, heat, vibration, mechanical damage, corrosive chemicals or dust

How often do you need to have your equipment tested and tagged?

In Australia, there are rules about how often electrical appliances need to be checked for safety, which is called “test and tag frequency”. The AS/NZS 3760:2022 Standard is like a guidebook for this, and it tells you how often appliances in different environments need to be checked.

For example, appliances on a construction site need to be checked every 3 months, while appliances in an office kitchen only need to be checked once a year. Some businesses might do more checks than the standard requires, which is okay, but doing fewer checks is not okay.

To check appliances, people use a portable appliance tester and look at the appliance to make sure it’s safe. The rules for how often to check appliances were updated in 2022, and the new guidelines can be found in Table 2.4 of the AS/NZS 3760:2022 Standard. In addition, faulty equipment can cause fires that cause serious damage and loss of life. If that’s not enough, you are legally required by the government to test and tag electrical equipment and there are hefty fines for failing to do so.

Testing and Tagging Frequency for NSW Businesses

For construction and other harsh environments like marine, appliances need to be tested every three months because of how rough the conditions are. This is the strictest requirement for testing and tagging, and there are special colors that need to be used for the tags.

If you’re renting equipment, it needs to be checked visually and tested and tagged every three months. It depends on how long you have the equipment for, but it’s usually the responsibility of whoever has it for more than three months.

If you’re buying second-hand equipment, it doesn’t need to be retested because it’s being sold to an end user. There are special tags for second-hand equipment that look different, but the testing procedures are the same.
